The Colonel’s Pride

Who are we?

Who is “The Colonels Pride”? The Colonels Pride is the James Wood High School band – a group of JWHS students that work together during the school and non-school hours to present an award winning musical program. The musical program is under the overall direction of Mr. Jeff Rutherford. Through a strong parent organization and continued dedication of the Frederick County School Board and students, the James Wood High School Band has become a well respected organization within the Frederick County community, Winchester, VA, community, and State of Virginia.

About the Bands

Marching Band

Marching band begins rehearsing in early August and continues through early November. Marching band consists of current Concert Band and Symphonic Wind Ensemble students. On Fridays of home football games, the ensemble will remain at school after school to rehearse prior to the game that night.

The students will be released once the band room is clean after the game is over and everything is put away. During the marching season, the marching band will participate in three/four marching band festivals.

See the schedule for the dates of these events. All marching band students are required to attend band camp and all rehearsal and performances of the marching band, including Christmas Parade and Apple Blossom Parade performances. Any students not honoring his/her commitment to the marching band will be removed from the group at the discretion of the director.

Band Camp in August is mandatory for all students in the marching band. The dates for camp for the coming year will be August 3 – 6, August 9 – 13, with a culminating performance/dinner on August 13, 2010.

Jazz Lab Band/James Wood Jazz Ensemble/Jazz Combo

The jazz band classes will be meeting during the “0” period again this coming school year. It is necessary to meet this way because if put into the regular school day, students do not have enough elective credits to fit jazz into their schedules. Having the schedule as it works in the “0” period, allows not only one band, it allows two jazz ensembles to exist for students. This has allowed the jazz program to grow over the course of the past three years to its current level.

The JWHS Jazz Ensemble will meet on DAY 1 and the JWHS Jazz Lab Band will meet on DAY 2. The bands will be set up during the month of August and will begin rehearsal on the first day of school. The “0” period begins at 7:00 AM every morning.

The JWHS Jazz Ensembles will perform concerts throughout the year as well as give performances on the Spring Trip and Jazz Festival in February.

The Jazz Combo group is made up of the top students from the JWHS Jazz Ensemble and rehearses every Friday morning. The group performs at special events, banquets and dinners throughout the school year.

Symphonic Wind Ensemble

The JWHS Symphonic Wind Ensemble (SWE) is the premier concert ensemble at JWHS. It is made up of the top instrumentalists at James Wood High School and prides itself as one of the finest concert ensembles in the area. This group is a more advanced ensemble specializing in traditional and contemporary works for the concert band. Generally the ensemble performs grade 5 & 6 music and carries with it the same high standards of any professional wind ensemble. See the schedule for other dates and times for SWE concerts.

Concert Band

The JWHS Concert Band (CB) is the starter ensemble for students in the JWHS band program. This ensemble is geared towards the abilities of the younger high school student and allow for the highest degree of performance skill and musicianship that is possible. Generally this band performs grade 4 & 5 music and prides itself on being able to look and sound as any college or professional wind ensemble would in performance situations. The schedule will include lunch and each student will have a study hall at some point. See the schedule for other dates and times for CB concerts.
