Who are we?
Who is “The Colonel’s Pride”? The Colonel’s Pride is the James Wood High School band – a group of JWHS students that work together during school and non-school hours to present an award-winning musical program.
The musical program has been under the direction of Mr. Jeffrey Rutherford since 1996. Originally from Ohio, Mr. Rutherford graduated from Bowling Green University with a Bachelor of Music Education and went on to earn his Master in Music Education from Shenandoah University. During his tenure at James Wood High School, his students have consistently received excellent and superior ratings on both the field and stage.
Mr. Rutherford, working alongside JWHS chorus directors, drama directors, and current band members, has helped the musical theatre program continue to shine performing shows like The Music Man, Into the Woods, Shrek, The Addams Family, and Little Shop of Horrors.
As a musician, Mr. Rutherford has performed as a freelance trombonist with numerous musical groups both in Ohio and in Virginia. As a member of the Washington Symphony, Mr. Rutherford had the honor of performing on the lawn of the Capitol Building on September 11, 2002, in honor of those who lost their lives in the terror attacks the previous year. During his summers, he returns to Shenandoah University and performs with their orchestra during the summer musical theatre program.
Through a strong parent organization and continued dedication of the Frederick County School Board and students, the James Wood High School Band has become a well-respected organization within the Frederick County community, Winchester community, and State of Virginia.
Marching band begins rehearsing during band camp each summer and continues through early November. Marching band consists of current concert band, symphonic wind ensemble, and color guard students. In the fall, the band plays at all home football games, select away games, and other school events. They also compete in several marching band festivals where they are rated on their performance. When football season ends, the students begin concert season and indoor color guard only regrouping to perform in the Winchester Christmas Parade and the Apple Blossom Parades.
The JWHS Concert Band is the starter ensemble for students in the JWHS band program. This ensemble is geared towards the abilities of younger high school students and allows them to work on their musicianship and performance skills by performing music rated a level 4 or 5.
Symphonic Wind Ensemble
The JWHS Symphonic Wind Ensemble is the premier concert ensemble at JWHS. The group is a more advanced ensemble specializing in traditional and contemporary works rated a level 5 or 6.
